If you’re thinking about going after someone’s husband ladies, the aftermath might put a real dent in your 401K. (Check out this story on GMA.) The legal term for this is alienation of affection. It’s an old law, still on the books in seven states, but how does this old concept of marriage play in the real world of today’s relationships? Is his romantic affection for you something that another woman can readily siphon like gas out of a car? Can the right perfume and a tight mini-skirt really undue a strong relationship? Isn’t this less about affection and more about commitment?
When I hear stories like this and see women on television proclaiming how they were done wrong by the “other woman” it makes me feel sad, for everyone involved. No one in this scenario gets what they really want. As women over 50, we are facing a new romantic reality. Perhaps the first step in finding love after 50 is to understand what we want and need now. We’ve got to stop using romantic guidelines created way back then with our unformed teenage brains. Finding love today requires using all the great wisdom and experience you’ve collected over the years. Understand what will really work for you and then decide how you plan to go out and get it. Caution, whatever your plan or strategy turns out to be, just make sure you’re wise enough not to end up on the wrong side of a 9 million dollar lawsuit.
